1877 Mary Shadrick – new Head Mistress

April 9th 1877 I, Mary Shadrick, assumed the mistress-ship of this school today.
April 10th 1877 Now, for the first time, the school is considered as quite separate from the mixed school of older children. Examined the children, found the children very backward – order – not good.
1st May 1877 Reverend A. P. Wharton visited the school; I commenced to work on a new timetable.
7th May 1877 Two children, Annie Cheeseman and Ada Cheeseman, sent home because their school money was not paid up and their mother refused to pay it.
14th May 1877 I gave John Garner one stripe on his hand with a cane as a punishment for playing on his way to school and repeatedly coming late in as a consequence.
August 1877 Visit from Mrs Cazalet.
24th August 1877 Start of summer holidays.
October 1877 Half day holiday for harvest.
17th January 1878 Some children partook of a hot dinner at school today and this is to be the case once each week during the winter months.
22nd April 1878 Easter Monday – usual school work.
9th August 1878 The children had their annual break at Fairlawne park today.
30th September 1878 Hop-picking holiday.
21st December 1878 Mary Shadrick has arranged temporary cover of the school whilst she is away for some weeks after Christmas for the benefit of her health.
January 1879 Miss Annie Burke took temporary charge of the school.
10th January 1879 Attendance very low due to scarletina.
21 February 1879 Snowy weather – only 4 children present today.
17th March 1879 Many children absent through illness – measles.
20th August 1879 Half the children absent today owing to the very heavy rain.
26th August 1879 A holiday given today – choir extension.
27th August 1879 Annual break in Fairlawn House for the children.
24th October 1879 The children had a holiday on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the parish church.
29th October 1879 The school room being used for the performance of a wedding service.
19th December 1879 Mary Shadrick leaves the school.
